Pygmalion was a sculptor from Greek Mythology who carved a statue of a beautiful woman that was brought to life (Livingston, 12). I would argue that as a coach, I have the responsibility to follow the example of Pygmalion. I have to assume the role of a sculptor and carve/influence the implementation of best practices and techniques that our teams bring to life. I have to ensure that my message stimulates my organization and drives it towards creating/supporting a transformation.
This is very challenging for new agile coaches, because while they have book knowledge, they lack the situational awareness to influence a true transformation. There is no book that will teach you how to handle the unique situations you will face in our technology industry. I love working with new coaches, but always warn them of the “death by principle” syndrome. This syndrome happens when coaches come in and throw around well known agile buzz words and facts such as we should “Stand up during Standup” or “You have to do Automation.” While statements like these are true, where new coaches fall short is having the courage to stress the importance of leadership in the transformation. Secondly, they fail to deliver the prescription of how anyone can actually improve. What actions, practices, techniques can organizations take now?
A good coach helps build/create a better environment and understands that enthusiasm and empathy are infectious (Livingston, 14). He/She uses situational leadership abilities to identify and encourage change agents to lead the transformation. Then they can translate the transformation roadmap through the newly identified change agent. Letting them lead…This will allow the coach to understand the language and build the right influence to drive a roadmap that comforts and excites the team to make it a reality.
As a coach we have the opportunity to share insights that we have gained throughout of career; but as a coach we have the responsibility to help our clients create their own transformation story. This is a tremendous chance to drive future business practices within the technology industry. We must not take it lightly and must gain the proper knowledge and job skills to effectively support our clients transformation needs. Learn how to influence and sculpt a great plan and then allow your teams to bring it to life.
